This morning I had a doctor’s appointment for a blood test. They’re not so bad but I do tend to get quite light-headed afterwards. After walking home (in the gorgeous sun!!) I knew I needed something sweet to fill my tummy up. Although I don’t find blood tests particularly bad, usually I’m like ‘oh, is that it?!’ once it’s over, I found my stomach twisting itself in knots with nerves as soon as I was out of bed. This resulted in no breakfast. Not good! Anyway, I got home and went straight for the blender to make a smoothie. This is probably my favourite smoothie ever. I really, really love green smoothies but this one just tastes SO good. Almost too good to believe it’s all natural, healthy ingredients. Not only does it taste pretty much like a glass of chocolate milk it has some seriously cool health benefits. Always a plus.
Cacao is a super nutritionally dense food. Containing essential vitamins and minerals this whole food is a great ingredient to add to smoothies, nut milk, baking etc. I seriously love it in all forms. Powder, beans, nibs. YES to cacao! (Read more about its greatness here)
Maca is another ancient food that has some awesome benefits. Least of which is its malty, caramel like taste that is perfect for delicately sweetening your creations in the kitchen. There has been research on maca’s long list of benefits, including; increased energy, endurance, libido, reducing depression and anxiety and regulating hormones. Before I go on to share this recipe with you I wanted to note that this week is National Eating Disorders Week. This is something that I can speak about from personal experience as I have struggled with disordered eating for many, many years. It is so important to let people who are currently fighting with this to know that they are not alone and that it can and definitely does get better. Admitting to yourself that you need help can be truly one of the most difficult things you can imagine but it is the first step to taking back your life, your body and your mind. We need to get rid of the stigma and usher in care, love and acceptance. If you are someone battling with this, speak up because you are most definitely worth a life free of this monster. Know that you are not alone and you are loved.
Mood Boosting Cacao Smoothie
Makes one smoothie
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 cup plant milk (I use almond)
- 1 1/2 tsp raw organic cacao powder
- 1/2 tsp raw organic maca powder
- 1 tbsp almond butter
- Place in a blender and blend it baby.
* You could make this more filling by adding 1/2 cup of oats, you’d need to adjust the amount of liquid added if you did this. If you wanted it slightly more sweet you could add a medjool date and some other more obscure ingredients that would work great here could be tocotrienols in powder form (a good source of vitamin E) and ashwagandha powder (an adaptogenic herb).
